Your Energy Efficiency Upgrade May Qualify for a USDA Grant

Sun and wind exposure. General wear and tear. There are many reasons why you may be in need of a greenhouse upgrade. If it’s an upgrade related to energy efficiency, you may be able to qualify for a USDA grant.
The USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) provides grants to companies located in areas with a population of 50,000 or less. If your company is not in a rural area, you may still be able to submit an application if your project is for on-site production.
Here are a few questions you may have about REAP grants:
What Types of Upgrades Will a REAP Grant Fund?
Funds through a REAP grant may be applied to an upgrade in energy systems, such as geothermal or electric generation, wind and solar generation or biomass energy systems. They may also be used to upgrade your HVAC system, install new insulation, or purchase cooling or refrigeration units, lighting, windows and doors. If you are considering an upgrade from diesel to electric on new irrigation motors or are replacing any type of energy-inefficient machines, your upgrade may be eligible.
How Do I Submit a Grant?
The grant application process is completed on the USDA portal. To submit, you will first need to obtain a Unique Entity ID. You should allow a few weeks to complete this process.
Next, you can begin the grant application process. The USDA will check your tax returns and articles of incorporation. These verifications can also take time because there may be delays on the side of the government.
Is a Consultant Necessary?
While you can navigate the process on your own, hiring a consultation may be a valuable step. They are familiar with the application process and may know of additional opportunities for funding.
What About Vendors?
Yes, your vendor for your energy efficiency upgrade will also need to complete an application. You will find it valuable to partner with a greenhouse company that is familiar with USDA REAP grants.
What Else Do I Need to Know?
Don’t remove any of your old equipment, shades, windows or doors before applying for your REAP grant. Removing the items that you intend to replace in an energy efficiency upgrade may void the grant approval process. Wait until you have received full approval before you begin dismantling any equipment.
